Oscar McKenzie reported to the groups of the union for duty 9.11.1861, in Vermont. He served in Augur's Brigade, King's 1st Division, McDowell's 1st Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, 2nd regiment and company E at the beginning of the war.
He was wounded in the forefinger of the right hand 3.7.1863, in Gettysburg.

The veterinarian of the battalion tried to sew unsuccessfully the forefinger which has been wounded in which case the finger remained shorter than original. However, all the joints in the finger remained fortunately whole. Oscar returned to service still in December 1863. His wartime regiment was wound up, 25.2.1865, in which case he was moved to the transport groups of Pioneer regiment in Vermont . The war ended when South surrendering in April 1865.
